Juma Kittyler, a former Tanzania rugby player, proudly represented his country and played a key role in Tanzania’s victory in Division 2 of the Africa Rugby Championship in 2006. His journey from the rugby field to community leadership laid the foundation for a movement that continues to inspire young people today
Founded by Juma Kittyler, Tanzania Rugby Development (TRD) is a grassroots initiative dedicated to using the power of rugby to promote healthy living, teamwork, and mutual respect among disadvantaged youth in Northern Tanzania, with a special focus on Arusha.
Our rugby programme exists to ignite transformation in the lives of young people, especially those from underserved communities, by harnessing the power of sport as a vehicle for growth, unity, and opportunity. Rooted in the spirit of resilience and teamwork, we use rugby not just as a game, but as a life-shaping force that teaches discipline, leadership, and the courage to dream beyond limitations.
We believe that every young person, regardless of background, deserves the chance to discover their strength, build their confidence, and find a sense of belonging. Through structured training, mentorship, and community engagement, we cultivate not only skilled athletes but also responsible citizens and future leaders.
This programme is a reflection of our belief that sport can break cycles of poverty, bridge social divides, and inspire a generation to rise. It is a call to action for youth to reclaim their power, for communities to unite in support, and for the world to witness the untapped potential of Tanzanian talent.
Nurturing young minds through play, mentorship, and foundational life skills.

At Tanzania Rugby Development, we empower youth through teamwork, respect, and discipline, transforming challenges into strength and turning dreams into reality
Tanzania Rugby Development is the heart of Rugby in Tanzania. It’s more than a game; it’s a classroom without walls, a field where futures are shaped. Our coaching program delivers far more than physical training; it’s a holistic journey that fuses athletic discipline with life skills, character development, and critical thinking.
We welcome both boys and girls into an environment where they are challenged to grow not just as athletes, but as leaders, teammates, and changemakers. Each session is a carefully crafted blend of movement and meaning, featuring drills that teach resilience, strategy sessions that sharpen the mind, and team huddles that foster trust and a sense of belonging.
Through rugby, we cultivate confidence, nurture discipline, and ignite a sense of purpose. Our youth leave the field not only stronger and faster, but also more self-aware, more courageous, and more connected to their communities.
This is coaching with a conscience. This is education through action.
At Tanzania Rugby Development (TRD), touch rugby is more than a sport it is a movement. By establishing a high-quality league among Arusha schools, we are planting seeds of discipline, teamwork, and resilience in the next generation. Each fixture, whether local or international, is a bridge: connecting young athletes to opportunity, communities to shared pride, and Tanzania to the wider rugby world.
Working hand in hand with regional rugby bodies, we are not only raising standards but expanding horizons. Every match becomes a classroom of values, every season a chapter in a larger story of empowerment. Step by step, game by game, we are shaping a stronger, more connected rugby community one that reflects the spirit of unity and the promise of transformation.
We believe growth is not left to chance it is crafted, nurtured, and lived with intention. Every monthly review and bi‑monthly coaching evaluation is more than a checkpoint; it is a promise to our youth, our coaches, and our community. These moments of reflection sharpen our teaching, amplify our impact, and weave knowledge into a shared legacy.
We measure progress not in numbers alone, but in lives transformed, confidence awakened, and futures re‑imagined. Each lesson is a seed of change, each evaluation a step toward a stronger tomorrow. Our network thrives because we choose to listen, to adapt, and to rise together.
Growth is our manifesto. Every lesson counts. Every voice matters. Every step forward builds the movement we are creating a movement of empowerment, resilience, and hope.
Our commitment to capacity building goes far beyond technical training. By investing in coaches and referees, we nurture local leaders who become role models, mentors, and catalysts for change. Each program is designed not only to sharpen skills but to instil values of discipline, teamwork, and resilience.
At the heart of our approach is knowledge transfer: coaches empower students, and those students grow into future coaches and leaders. This cycle creates a living legacy a self-sustaining community where wisdom is passed forward, leadership is multiplied, and opportunities expand with every generation.
Through this model, rugby becomes more than a game. It becomes a platform for empowerment, a classroom for life skills, and a movement that strengthens communities from within.
